What is the greenhouse effect?

The earth has an atmosphere of greenhouse gases which act like the walls of a greenhouse trapping the sun's energy to warm our planet. There is a delicate balance between the amount of energy that comes in from the sun and the amount of energy reflected back out into space. Man's production of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane and nitrous oxide) is interfering with this balance and causing unnatural global warming.
